I graduated from highschool in June 2010 in France. I spent the next year studying in an applied arts school in Paris where I was in an artistic preparatory class for applied arts. I stayed in this class for one year and afterwards I applied to the Drawing Academy in Viborg for the autumn semester. This was my first experience in a foreign country. Animation has always been on my mind thanks to all the movies I watched as a child.
I am crazy about all kind of art ! I think this is why animation motivates me so much. I see it like the mix of all in all. I spend a lot of time viewing and looking for new references like illustrators or short movies, storytellers or "sketches artists" to get inspired by all of them. I could quote David Mazzucchelli, Stéphane Levallois, Marjane Sartrapi, Sempé, Louis Clichy, Glen Keane, Brecht Evens or Enrico Casarosa as some of my favorite artists. I am crazy about classical and contemporary ballets because it shows how far the body can push its limits in all its motion. My favorite choreographer stays Angelin Preljocaj who gives really beautiful interpretations of tales and concepts. Lots of beautiful ideas in his work. Music has also a huge place in my life certainly because of a musician family what pushes me to have the wish to follow it with drawings in motion. Then in animation I just "ate" cartoons and animation movies a lot and I remember to have been really inspired by the short movies "The Fire Bird" and "Rhapsodie in Blue" which we can watch in Fantasia 2000. It was this movie and Fantasia (the first made in 1940) that really sparked my interest and led me to focus on animation. The idea of combining drawing, imagination, movement, rhythm and music as they did in the films fascinated me. In 2004 I decided to study animation, and from that moment I knew that I had to improve my drawing skills. Since my graduation I took plenty of different art courses that gave me insight into many constructive experiences in the art world. Now, I finally feel ready to begin a bachelor program in animation.
This
is the reason why I am turning to the Animation Workshop - which is a
school that I strongly believe in. During my time at the Drawing
Academy, I talked a lot with students, teachers and guest teachers from
TAW and they only further convinced me that this was the place I wanted
to be. I believe that your course in Character Animation (CA) will help
me realise my dream of working in this field. Why CA and not the
Computer Graphics (CG) Program? Even if I really like designing,
illustrating and imagining characters, I am certain that my fascination
for movement and the skills surrounding it - such as rhythm, time,
space, the representation of a story and the characters in them - are
more important to me. I see animation as a magic art used to create
optical illusions and I really would like to learn, to understand its
tricks. I am definitely interested in working as part of a team in the
production of a movie. I am also very interested in working alongside
other CA and CG students in the shared projects. Moreover, I think
studying in a foreign country can only help to open my mind and educate
me in new ways! After spending 6 months in Viborg I kind of fell in love
with the school even though I was not in the bachelor programs. Because
of that, I am curious to see what it will be like to study in a more
permanent basis there.
Concerning
my English level, as I am applying for the bachelor program in
Character Animation, I sadly do not have time to attend the IELTS exam. I
hope to take it and pass the exam before summer 2012.
